Eating your way through Italy – Client review

What it’s all about

Italy is a beautiful country in all ways, that is drenched in history and culture, good food and wine! From the amazing sights and ruins of Rome and Florence to the beautiful Coast of the Cinque Terre, Italy is incredibly diverse and beautiful with so much to offer. Peak season is warm and buzzing but going during off peak season was colder but had the added benefits of less queues for sights and events.

Unforgettable highlights

Our starting point being Rome, it was a wonderful place to begin as it is home to the famous Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain and of course the Colosseum and Roman ruins.  There is so much to do and experience along with the cuisine. Rome also has great shopping, and not mention fabulous Gelato and pastries!

Florence was a beautiful city to see, with its stunning cathedrals and canals, which host amazing markets. We indulged ourselves in what the cuisine had to offer and also did a cooking class which I highly recommend as learning to make gnocchi and Italian Chocolate desserts is a priceless experience and something useful to take home.  Florence is the home of the Statue of David, so make sure this is added to your itinerary along with visiting the Mercato Centrale night food market – it’s an Italian culinary blast!

Staying in Vernazza (on the Cinque Terre), was a beautiful sight! Being a coastal fishing village (and off season), it was very serene, quiet and a great place to recoup and relax. We walked from Vernazza to Monterosso, which I highly recommend as the sights of the coast are spectacular, just make sure to wear good walking shoes!

Finishing off in Milan was beautiful again with amazing buildings, history and SHOPPING! There is a lot to do and see including the Milan Cathedral, the world’s oldest shopping mall, The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and of course again the canals, museums and art galleries.

Insider tips

Public transport here is amazing and efficient. We recommend taking trains between places/cities as they are reasonable cost wise and are the easiest means of travel if driving or hiring a car is not something you want to do.

Tipping is essential but only for hotel staff and waiters, however after tasting the food, you will quickly learn that tipping is very much worth each penny and well deserved!

Walking around is very safe but keep valuables close as pick-pocketing is known to happen. We found using a city map to be an efficient way of getting around without Wi-Fi and most hotels have them available for free.

People tend to sell items on the street and can be quite pushy. Be firm but polite in your response as they will leave you alone. Just be aware and have your wits about you … if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Suits a traveller who

ANYONE really.  It’s a great experience of history, culture with amazing food!

Also, if you go in summer, make sure you can handle the heat!
