New York, New York!

What it’s all about

The “Big Apple” is on a lot of traveller’s bucket lists and I have been lucky enough to visit twice. It is a big city with lots of must sees and at least a week is needed to do it justice. It’s about doing lots of planning to ensure you don’t waste time there deciding what to do.

Unforgettable highlights

  • Walking in Central Park – so much to see and it’s huge to try and do in one bite.
  • Views at sunset from the top of the Empire State Building
  • Seeing New York from the Brooklyn Bridge
  • Experiencing a Broadway show
  • A cruise to the Statue of Liberty
  • A day at Ground Zero – 9/11 Memorial

Insider tips

  • Buy a New York Pass. It is great value for what it includes. Go early to Madame Tussaud’s to get the pass.
  • Get your Broadway tickets from the half price booth at Battery Park
  • Great shopping at Century 21
  • Use the underground instead of the bus as traffic is horrendous
  • Visit the highlights of “The Met”
  • “Food on Foot” tour (part of the NY Pass)
  • Hop on hop off bus good value outside peak traffic times
  • Try to see a TV show taping

Suits a traveller who

Loves walking and exploring different neighbourhoods. Can cope with crowds and traffic. Loves good food as so many choices. Shopping is amazing.

Travel essentials

Good walking shoes. Pack for the season – gets very cold in winter and very hot in summer.

Be aware

  • Keep your belongings safe at all times
  • Look right first before you cross the street
  • Accommodation is expensive, maybe if budget conscious try a hotel just outside Manhattan
